What Does Adderall Do?

Adderall is the brand name of a type of prescription medication given to and used by people who suffer from Hyperactivity Disorder, otherwise known as ADHD.

It is actually a combination of two stimulant drugs: amphetamine and dextroamphetamine.

Coming in either a tablet form or as a time-release capsule, the way that Adderall works is that it basically stimulates a hyperactive brain, calming it down and allowing someone with ADHD to concentrate better. Because people with ADHD have a hard time concentrating due to their brain being in constant search of stimuli, taking Adderall gives it exactly what it wants. This allows the hyperactive brain to operate at “normal levels.”

How Does It Affect Sex Drive?

The way Adderall achieves its effect on the brain is by increasing the amount of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine – neurotransmitters found in the human body that are responsible for regulating mood and behaviour.

Regular intake can cause a user to build up a tolerance for it. Or, in some cases, even reliance.

Often as the result of the increased dosage of Adderall due to tolerance, users can suffer from a number of side effects. This includes, among many others, diminished sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and in worse cases, even impotence.

It takes a long time for the body to build a tolerance to Adderall and for the amphetamine-dextroamphetamine to build up in a person’s body, however. It just doesn’t happen instantly or after a few hours of taking it.

What’s important is to take the medication as prescribed if you are required by your physician to take Adderall. If you’re worried about it affecting your libido or sex drive, you may want to consider if there are other factors affecting it as well.

For example, what are other kinds of medication you are taking? Do you drink alcohol a lot? Do you take birth control bills, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety medications? Either of these things can also cause a decrease in sexual drive. Alcohol, for example, should never be mixed with Adderall. Doing so can exacerbate the negative effects of alcohol on the human body, leading to over-drinking and disrupting your sleep schedule, which, in turn can affect your overall health, including your sexual drive.

Does Adderall Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

Yes. It can. But, while Adderall can indeed cause erectile dysfunction and a decrease in sexual drive, it is very rarely the only factor.

Try to keep a journal of your medication. Take notes of when you took Adderall and when you started noticing your sexual drive going down. Make sure to write down other medications or substances you’re taking as well. This way, it will be much easier for you and your healthcare provider to find out exactly what the reason is behind your decreased sexual drive and eventually come up with an actionable course of treatment.
