Many of us start our day off with coffee and the question does coffee cause heartburn in 2018 is in everyone’s mind. Well, coffee does cause heartburn, especially those who are diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Today according to studies, it has shown that four out of every ten people experience heartburn at least one time a week if not more. Even if you are not diagnosed with GERD you could have it due to the frequency of heartburn.
Sometimes you may have GERD without symptoms. Whether you show symptoms or not your doctor may suggest some lifestyle changes that will help your symptoms out. Many people notice that certain foods can flare up their symptoms including heartburn.
If you suffer from heartburn you may be putting your esophagus or esophageal sphincter at risk. If your lower esophageal sphincter is weakened then you may be experiencing a backward flow of your stomach contents which could lead to acid reflux. Some triggers and foods that could weaken these body parts include:

- Fatty Foods
- Spicy Foods
Caffeine and Heartburn
Whether you suffer from GERD or simply heartburn once in a while you may want to limit your coffee and tea intake. If you are unsure what is causing your heartburn a food log is suggested to be able to see when your heartburn started and what is the last thing you ate.
Many people around the world drink coffee. Caffeine is a major component of coffee and is why so many people drink it, especially in the United States. Coffee relaxes your lower esophageal sphincter which can lead to heartburn.
However, if you are a coffee drinker you may want to watch your caffeine intake. The coffee is only the problem for your heartburn due to the caffeine. Caffeine content also varies by the type of roast. The darker roasts have less caffeine per bean. Roasts that are labeled light or commonly called breakfast blend contain the most caffeine. If you find that caffeine causes heartburn for you, you may want darker roasts for your coffee.
Many people suffer from heartburn due to other reasons than caffeine. If you are a person who is overweight, you are more susceptible to heartburn. It is suggested that you may want to lose some weight if you are considered overweight.
If you sleep flat this may cause heartburn. Try elevating your head off the bed by six inches. This could be done with pillows or special beds that allow you to sit up.
Lastly, try not to eat within three hours of going to bed. This allows your food to settle and digest. If you are eating right before bed it could be causing you to wake up with heartburn.
