Does Frappuccino Have Coffee in it?

Many of us go to Starbucks and order a Frappuccino but the question many have is does Frappuccino have coffee in it in 2018? The answer is yes, Frappuccino’s do have coffee in them which also means they contain caffeine. However, crème-based Frappuccino’s do not have coffee.

What is a Frappuccino?

Starbucks Corporation trademarked the brand Frappuccino. A Frappuccino is ice blended with coffee drinks. The drink consists of coffee or a crème base that has been blended with ice and other varying ingredients depending on the type of Frappuccino. A Frappuccino is usually topped with whipped cream and varying sauces. You can also purchase already bottled Frappuccino’s from grocery stores or vending machines.

Crème Based Frappuccino’s

If you are ordering a crème-based Frappuccino then you are not having any coffee. The standard Frappuccino’s that are crème based are Vanilla Bean, Green Tea, Strawberries and Cream, and the Double Chocolatey Chip.

There are many seasonal Frappuccino’s that you could find at different times of the year at Starbucks. These are usually made with a coffee base, however, if you do not like the coffee base you can request a crème base. Starbucks has no issue making a Frappuccino crème based instead of coffee based.

Coffee Based Frappuccino’s

Many of the drinks that you will find at Starbucks are coffee based. This includes many of their Frappuccino’s.  The coffee that is used in a Frappuccino is what is called a Frappuccino roast.  It is like a high concentrate instant coffee. The reason this is used is because it does not cause a weird texture that will expand the drink too much. That is why Starbucks does not use espresso in their drinks due to the runny texture.

History

Frappuccino is a portmanteau of the term frappe. Frappe is the name for a milkshake containing ice cream and cappuccino from New England. A Frappuccino is basically an espresso coffee with frothed milk today. Frappe was trademarked in Boston, Massachusetts. When the word was trademarked it was known as a thick milkshake with ice cream.

The first Frappuccino was developed as well as named and trademarked by George Howell. His coffee chain in Eastern Massachusetts was known as The Coffee Connection. Andrew Frank had created the first Frappuccino. After this Starbucks had then purchased The Coffee Connection back in 1994. When they bought the coffee chain shops, they also had the right to use, make, and market the Frappuccino. Once all these rights were given, Starbucks had the right to sell Frappuccino’s as well. The first Starbucks Frappuccino was sold in 1995 with a new recipe. As of 2012 the Frappuccino had two billion dollars in sales alone.

The Starbucks Frappuccino recipe had derived from a fusion of many different cold drinks. One drink that the recipe had come from is the coffee frap. The coffee frap is similar to an iced coffee. Another drink the Frappuccino had come from is the frappe which is a blend of ice cream, syrup, and
